Póilín Ní Chiaráin
Rugadh Póilín Ní Chiarain i nDumha Locha in Iorras i gContae Mhaigh Eo. Chuaigh sí ar an meánscoil i gColáiste Muire, Tuar Mhic Éadaigh agus ar an ollscoil i nGaillimh. Chaith sí tréimhse fhada ag obair in RTÉ, Baile Átha Cliath mar thaighdeoir agus mar thuairisceoir ar an gclár Féach agus ina dhiaidh sin le Nuacht. Chuaigh sí go Béal Feirste do RTÉ News i 1981: tá sí gafa ó shin le tuairisceoireacht agus anailís ar chúrsaí reatha Thuaisceart Éireann. Tar éis tréimhse mar cheannasaí nuachta leis an BBC i nDoire, d’iompaigh sí ar scríbhneoireacht i nGaeilge i 1996. Mar cholúnaí don nuachtán Foinse ó bunaíodh é go dtí gur cuireadh deireadh leis i 2009 bhuaigh sí gradam Oireachtais agus bhronn an tUachtarán ‘An Peann faoi Bhláth’ uirthi i 1998. Colúnaí ócáideach i The Irish Times agus i Comhar í agus rannpháirtí go rialta i gcláracha raidió agus teilifíse ar BBC, RTÉ agus TG4. Rinne sí tráchtaireacht ar chláracha faisnéise TG4 faoi bhusanna agus faoi thraenacha agus rinne sí an leagan Gaeilge de scripteanna do na scannáin ‘Ar Intinn Eile’ agus Congo 1961. Is comhfhreagraí RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta sa tuaisceart í agus colúnaí na seirbhíse Tuairisc.ie.
Póilín Ní Chiaráin is a Mayo woman who has spent most of her adult life in Northern Ireland. Born in Dumha Locha in Erris, a place still very dear to her, she got her secondary education in south Mayo, in Coláiste Muire, Tuar Mhic Éadaigh. After University College, Galway (BA, H. Dip. Ed.), she went to work in Telefís Éireann (now RTÉ) in Dublin as a researcher. Later she was a reporter on Féach and subsequently on Nuacht. From there she moved to Belfast as a news reporter. Since 1981 she has covered for several outlets such seminal events as the H Block Hunger Strikes, the Enniskillen bombing and the Good Friday Agreement. After a period as Head of News and Sport in BBC Foyle she turned for the first time to writing for print, as Gaeilge. As a regular columnist for Foinse she won Oireachtas awards twice and was presented with the ‘An Peann faoi Bhláth’ honour in 1998. She has been an occasional columnist in The Irish Times and in Comhar, has translated film scripts to Irish, is a regular columnist for the online service Tuairisc.ie and is RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta’s specialist on Northern Ireland affairs.
