Bhain sé an chéim BA sa Ghaeilge agus sa Stair amach in 1972 i gColáiste na hOllscoile, Corcaigh. Shaothraigh an chéim MA san ollscoil chéanna sa bhliain 1975 ar chanúint Ghaeilge an Chláir faoi stiúir an Ollaimh R. A. Breatnach.

Liam P. Ó Murchú was born in the suburb of Blackpool, in Cork City in 1952. He was educated under the Christian Brothers in the North Monastery, Cork. He holds the BA degree in Irish and History from University College, Cork (1972) and studied for the MA degree under Professor R. A. Breatnach in UCC. He held three successive scholarships in the School of Celtic Studies, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (1975–78) under Professors Breandán Ó Buachalla, Brian Ó Cuív and David Greene. He lectured in Modern Irish in University College, Cork from 1979 to 2017. His scholarly interests include Irish language poetry from its early beginnings to the present day, in particular the works of Brian Merriman and Dáibhí Ó Bruadair. Another area of interest are the language, traditions and literature of West Kerry.
The National University of Ireland awarded him the degree DLittCelt propter opera edita in 2015.
