Rugadh agus tógadh Diarmuid in Inis, Co. an Chláir. Thosaigh sé ag plé le cúrsaí aisteoireachta agus scríbhneoireachta ar bhonn gairmiúil mar chuid den chompántas taistil amharclainne, Na Fánaithe, i ndeireadh na n80idí. I dtús na 90idí bhog sé go RTÉ agus as sin siar arís nuair a cuireadh tús leis an stáisiún nua teilifíse TnaG/TG4, agus an sobaldráma Ros na Rún.
In 2001, bhunaigh sé a chomhlacht féin, POC productions, chun tabhairt faoi thograí amharclainne ar leith in éindí leis an stiúrthóir, Paul Brennan. Ba iad Pádraic Ó Conaire agus Paris, Texas an dá dhráma is mó cáil uaidh ón tréimhse sin.
Ceapadh é ina fheidhmeannach drámaíochta le hAcadamh na Ollscolaíochta Gaeilge mar a chaith sé trí bliana ag forbairt cúrsaí taibhealaíona. Idir an dá linn cháiligh sé ina dhrámateiripeoir agus bhíodh sé ag múineadh ar an gcúrsa drámateiripe in Ollscoil Mhá Nuad nó gur tháinig deireadh leis an gcúrsa sin i 2014. Ó shin i leith is ag plé leis an scríbhneoireacht chruthaitheach agus leis an aisteoireacht a bhíonn sé trasna chuile mheán.
I measc na dtograí scríbhneoireachta is déanaí uaidh tá an dráma fada stáitse, Nóra, bunaithe ar Nóra Mharcuis Bhig le Pádraic Ó Conaire, an fadscannán, Finky, comhscríofa le Dáthaí Keane agus an ceoldráma don stáitse agus don raidió, The Playboy of The Western World – The Musical, scríofa in éineacht le Justin McCarthy. D’fhorbair sé srath scéalaíochta do pháistí, Tuath Dé Danann, do RnaG, i gcomhpháirt le Mairéad Uí Dhomhnaill.
Is iomaí aoi-léacht, ceardlann agus caint a thug Diarmuid in institiúidí acadúla agus ealaíne ar fud na hÉireann agus thar lear agus tá tréimhsí cónaitheacha caite aige suas síos cósta thiar na hÉireann agus ar an mór-roinn chomh maith.
Diarmuid hails from Ennis, County Clare and began his acting and writing career with a professional Irish language touring company, Na Fánaithe, in the late 80’s, before moving to RTÉ Television in the early 90’s and from there to the fledgling TnaG/TG4 and the soap opera, Ros na Rún. In 2001 he set up his own theatre company, POC productions, to develop specific projects alongside director Paul Brennan. Pádraic Ó Conaire and Paris, Texas are his best known works from that period. There followed a three year stint as a full-time lecturer in the performing arts with an t-Acadamh, NUI Galway. He subsequently qualified as a dramatherapist and was a regular guest lecturer in dramatherapy in Maynooth University until the course’s demise in 2014. Since then he has worked full-time as a writer, performer and translator, specialising in adaptations across various media.
Recent writing projects include Nóra, a full-length stage version of the short story, Nóra Mharcuis Bhig, by Pádraig Ó Conaire, Finky, a feature film co-writen with Dáthaí Keane for Cine4 and The Playboy of The Western World – The Musical, an adapation for both stage and radio of Synge’s classic play, co-writen with Justin McCarthy. Diarmuid developed a storytelling series for RnaG for children, Tuath Dé Danann, with Mairéad Uí Dhomhnaill.
He has been invited to speak in many academic and arts institutions both nationally and internationally as well as participating in residencies all along the western seaboard as well as on the European continent.
