Art Ó Maolfabhail was born in 1932 in Limerick City where his father, a County Derry man and a member of An Garda Síochána, was stationed. His mother was from Cork. He grew up and learned many things in Roscrea in County TIpperary, where at the Boys’ National School there was much singing in Irish, English and Church Latin. It was in Roscrea also, he says, that hurling entered into his heart although he had seen his first game in Limerick, and had got his first hurl there. From 1945 he has lived in Dublin where he attended Coláiste Mhuire (The Irish Christian Brothers) and University College Dublin.
From university he was employed by An Comhchaidreamh working on Comhar magazine and in the Head-office of Gael Linn before he joined The Ordnance Survey as a Placenames Officer in 1958. He was Chief Placenames Officer and Secretary of the Placenames Commission during the years 1976–1997. From 1984 he was a member of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names and was the Rapporteur of the Sixth United Nations Conference on the Standardization of Geographical Names in 1992.
He has had many articles on various subjects published in a wide range of periodicals, and writes mostly in Irish which is his preferred language. He has three collection of poems — Aistí Dána (1964), Úlla Beaga (1986), Nóiníní (2013); a book (in English) on the history of the game of hurling: Camán — 2000 years of hurling in Ireland (1973); a book on placenames of Celtic language origin: Ó Lyon go Dún Lúiche, Logainmneacha san Oidhreacht Cheilteach (2005)
