Ríonach uí Ógáin is a former Director of the National Folklore Collection, UCD. She has published widely in Irish and in English on traditional music and song and on other aspects of oral tradition. Her study of Daniel O’Connell was published in Irish An Rí gan Choróin (An Clóchomhar, 1984) and in English Immortal Dan: Daniel O'Connell in Irish Folk Tradition (Geography Publications, 1995). She has also published a number of compact discs with accompanying booklets. These include Beauty an Oileáin: Music and Song of the Blasket Islands, Ireland/Irlande: Musiques Traditionnelles d’Aujourd’hui: Traditional Musics of Today and Sorcha Ní Ghuairim: Traditional Songs from Conamara . She was editor of Béaloideas: The Journal of the Folklore of Ireland Society from 2009 – 2018. Her publications include The Otherworld: Music and Song from Irish Tradition (Comhairle Bhéaloideas Éireann, 2012) with Tom Sherlock . Her work on traditional song in Irish includes Clár Amhrán Bhaile na hInse (An Clóchomhar, 1976) and Faoi Rothaí na Gréine: Amhráin as Conamara a bhailigh Máirtín Ó Cadhain (Coiscéim, 1999). She edited the field diary of Séamus Ennis ‘Mise an Fear Ceoil’ Séamus Ennis - Dialann Taistil 1942-1946 (Cló Iar-Chonnachta, 2007), which appeared in translation entitled Going to the Well for Water: The Field Diaries of Séamus Ennis (Cork University Press, 2009) and the book and compact disc Colm Ó Caodháin: An Irish Singer and His World (Cork University Press, 2021). A Festschrift in her honour entitled Life, Lore and Song: Binneas an tSiansa was published in 2019 by Four Courts Press. She is a founding member of Fondúireacht Bhéaloideas Éireann, The National Folklore Foundation http://www.nationalfolklorefoundation.com/. During her time as Director of the National Folklore Collection she instigated the digitisation of the Collection now available at www.duchas.ie and she continues to demonstrate the importance of making archival material accessible to a larger audience.
