Pádraig Ó Fiannachta
Genres: Translator, Poet, Academic writer
Rugadh é i 1927 i mBaile Móir, sa Daingean i gContae Chiarraí. Is iomaí leabhar a scríobh an tOllamh Ó Fiannachta agus is iomaí leabhar fós a raibh baint aige leo mar eagarthóir, mar chomhairleoir agus mar fhoilsitheoir. Ba é a bhí i mbun an chlóphreas An Sagart agus Iris na hOidhreachta. Is dócha gurb iad Léachtaí Cholm Cille agus Irisleabhar Mhá Nuad an dá fhoilseachán is mó cáil. Ó d’éirigh sé as Ollúnacht na Nua-Ghaeilge i Maigh Nuad, chaith sé seal caite ina shagart paróiste i nGleann Fleisce ar dtús agus ansin sa Daingean. Is beag gné de shaíocht na Gaeilge (idir Shean-, Mheán-, agus Nua-Ghaeilge) nach raibh an-tuiscint aige uirthi agus d'fhoilsigh sé ábhar an-éagsúil ina dtaobh sin go léir. Tá ceithre leabhar taistil, leabhar urnaithe, dhá leabhar Teagasc Críostaí, agus cláir lámhscríbhinní foilsithe aige. Ó thaobh na scríbhneoireachta cruthaithí de, tá cnuasaigh filíochta curtha amach aige agus tá rogha dá shaothar le fáil sa tsraith Guth an Ealaíontóra (Cló Iar-Chonnachta, 1993). Thug an leabhar critice uaidh, Léas ar ár Litríocht (An Sagart, 1982), grinnléargas ar an litríocht trí chéile agus ar an litríocht chomhaimseartha go háirithe. Foilsíodh féilscríbhinn dó faoin teideal Stair na Gaeilge: in ómós do Pádraig Ó Fiannachta (An Sagart, 1994). Cailleadh é i mí Iúil 2016.
Born in 1927 in An Daingean, Co. Kerry, Pádraig Ó Fiannachta was a prolific writer and publisher, directing the work of the publishing company An Sagart. He also published Iris na hOidhreachta. Léachtaí Cholm Cille and Irisleabhar Mhá Nuad continue to be two of the more significant annual publications of An Sagart. Having retired from his Professorship in Modern Irish at Maynooth University in 1994, he served as parish priest in Glenflesk and then in An Daingean. He published on a wide diversity of subjects, utilising his extensive understanding of Old, Middle and Modern Irish scholarship. He also published travel books, prayer books, two books of religious doctrine, and manuscript catalogues. He also published works of creative writing, including a poetry collection, and his poetry was published in the series Guth an Ealaíontóra (Cló Iar-Chonnachta,1993). His book of literary criticism, Léas ar ár Litríocht (An Sagart, 1982) demonstrated his unique insight into literary works, and contemporary literature specifically. Stair na Gaeilge: in ómós do Pádraig Ó Fiannachta (An Sagart, 1994), a festschrift in his honour, was published after his retirement. He died in July 2016.
