Born Knock, Co. Mayo, 1948. Received secondary education in St Nathy’s College, Ballaghaderreen. Awarded BA in Celtic Studies, 1970, MA in Old and Middle-Irish Language and Literature, 1971, and Ph. D. in Irish, 1991, at St Patrick’s College, Maynooth. In Placenames Branch of the Ordnance Survey, 1972–93; lectured in Celtic Department, Queen’s University, Belfast, 1993-2004, and in Department of Irish, National University of Ireland, Galway, 2004–14. A member of the Placenames Commission 2003-13, and of the Royal Irish Academy since 2009. Spent thirty years editing the magnum opus of Dubhaltach Mac Fhir Bhisigh — Leabhar Mór na nGenealach: The Great Book of Irish Genealogies (5 volumes; 3,500+ pages, 2003–4). Other works include Turas na dTaoiseach nUltach as Éirinn (2007), six items in Léachtaí Cholm Cille (between 1972 and 2004), and five pieces in Irisleabhar Mhá Nuad (between 1971 and 2005). Co-edited Saltair Saíochta, Sanasaíochta agus Seanchais (2013) and Mayo: History and Society (2014). Has also published extensively in English on various aspects of Irish history and Gaelic literature.
