Rugadh Gearóid i mBéal Feirste i 1933 agus fuair sé a chuid oideachais sa chathair chéanna i gColáiste Naomh Maolmhaodhóg agus in Ollscoil na Banríona. Gearóid was born in Belfast in 1933 and was educated in that city in St Malachy’s College and Queen’s University. He spent 14 years teaching in various secondary schools before being appointed to a lectureship in the Department of Celtic Studies in Queen’s in 1968. He was promoted to the Chair of Celtic Studies in 1980. His primary interests were Irish dialectology and grammar but he also participated in projects involving toponymy and lexicography. He spent five years editing An tUltach.
