Worked in the Modern Irish Departments of NUI Gaway and NUI Dublin and in the Department of Irish Folklore, Dublin. Personal names, place names, dialects, Modern Irish literature, the Odyssey, the Divine Comedy, the Holy Bible, traditional prayers amongst his areas of expertise. A professor of language, literature and civilization in Saint Patrick’s College, Dublin; President of Newman College Ireland. He has published twelve collections of poetry, three novels, one collection of short stories and one musical: Valaintín. He has also published over fifty articles and over fifty reviews. His first novel won a national prize and his poetry has earned him three international prizes. He was awarded an Arts Council Literary Bursary in 1993 and a Travel and Training Award in 2010. The sole Irish representative at the Meeting with Artists which Benedict XVI held on November 21st 2009 in Rome. He won the Colm Cille Prize at the Strokestown International Poetry Competition in 2011. He represented Ireland on the Poets Tour of Scotland in 2012.
