Rugadh Cathal Ó Háinle i mBuaile na hAbhann, Co. na hIarmhí, sa bhliain 1940. Bhí a athair ina phríomhoide sa bhunscoil ansiúd, agus is sa scoil sin a fuair Cathal a chuid bunoideachais. Is i gColáiste N. Meal i Longfort a cuireadh meánoideachas air. Ina dhiaidh sin bhí sé ina mhac léinn sagartóireachta i gColáiste Phádraig, Maigh Nuad, áit ar bhain sé BA sa Léann Ceilteach agus BD sa Diagacht amach. Bhain sé MA sa Nua-Ghaeilge amach sa Choláiste Ollscoile, Baile Átha Cliath agus chaith bliain ina mhac léinn cuairte in Ollscoil Mhünchen sa Ghearmáin. Ceapadh é ina Ollamh le Nua-Ghaeilge i gColáiste Phádraig, Maigh Nuad, sa bhliain 1967. Bhog sé sa bhliain 1977 go dtí Coláiste na Tríonóide, áit ar ceapadh é ina léachtóir agus ar ball ina chomhollamh. Bronnadh Comhaltacht de chuid an Choláiste agus an chéim DLitt air níos déanaí agus ceapadh é ina Ollamh le Gaeilge sa bhliain 1990. Chuaigh sé ar scor sa bhliain 2004. Tá mórán léachtaí poiblí tugtha aige in Éirinn agus thar lear agus mórán aistí foilsithe aige ar ghnéithe de litríocht agus de theanga na Gaeilge Clasaicí agus Nua-Ghaeilge na linne seo.
Tá trí dhíolaim dá chuid aistí foilsithe aige, mar atá Promhadh Pinn (1978), Scáthanna (2008) agus Ceann faoi Eite (2013), agus is é eagarthóir An Leicseanáir (1970), Gearrscéalta an Phiarsaigh (1979, 1999), Criostalú: Aistí ar Shaothar Mháirtín Uí Chadhain (1998), Barbed Wire (le Máirtín Ó Cadhain, 2002), Cré na Cille (le Máirtín Ó Cadhain, an tríú heagrán, 2007) agus Stór na Síthe: Dánta Gaeilge Conleth Ellis (2014), agus comheagarthóir Unity in Diversity (2004) é. Cathal Ó Háinle was born in Ballinahown, Co. Westmeath, in 1940. He received his primary education there in the school of which his father was principal teacher, and his secondary education in St. Mel’s College, Longford. He then went as a clerical student to St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, where he was awarded a BA in Celtic Studies and a BD in Theology. Further studies at University College Dublin, led to an MA in Modern Irish, after which he spent a year as a visiting student at the University of München. He was appointed to the Chair of Modern Irish at St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, in 1967, and then in 1977 he moved to Trinity College, Dublin, where he took up a post as lecturer, and later associate professor, in the School of Irish. He was subsequently awarded the degree DLitt and was elected to Fellowship of Trinity College in 1982, and in 1990 he was appointed to the Chair of Irish which he held until his retirement in 2004. He has delivered many public lectures in Ireland and abroad and has published many papers on aspects of the literature and language of Early Modern and Modern Irish.
He has published three collections of his essays: Promhadh Pinn (1978), Scáthanna (2008) and Ceann faoi Eite (2013) and has edited An Leicseanáir (1970), Gearrscéalta an Phiarsaigh (1979, 1999), Criostalú: Aistí ar Shaothar Mháirtín Uí Chadhain (1998), Barbed Wire (by Máirtín Ó Cadhain, 2002), Cré na Cille (by Máirtín Ó Cadhain, third edition, 2007) and Stór na Síthe: Dánta Gaeilge Conleth Ellis (2014), and co-edited Unity in Diversity (2004). As a member of the Catholic Bishops’ Advisory Council for the Liturgy in Irish since 2005 he played a significant rôle in the publication of An Leabhar Aifrinn Rómhánach (2017). He was honoured by the publication of Féilscríbhinn do Chathal Ó Háinle in 2012.
Cathal is married to Íde and they have two daughters, Fionnuala and Caoimhe.
