Breandán Mac Gearailt is a former teacher, farmer, part-time journalist and activist. He established the Gaeltacht Civil Rights Movement in Kerry, and edited a number of journals, including Misneach and Iris na gCearta. He organised a campaign for Scoil Dhún Chaoin and organised a march in 1971 from Dún Chaoin to Dublin demanding rights for the Gaeltacht community, the reopening of the school, and the establishment of a democratic Gaeltacht organisation. He stood in the first election of Údarás na Gaeltachta in 1979 and has been a member of the Board since then, having been re-elected on each subsequent occasion. He was also a County Councillor and Lord Mayor of Kerry. He has written six books as well as tourist booklets, including 2,000+ Ceist, 500 Mallacht Ort, 500 Beannacht Ort, 200+ Tréanna, An Blas Muimhneach 1, and An Blas Muimhneach 2, Meascra, Seanfhocail gan Sárú and Na Laochra Seo 'Gainne. He is currently working on a book of place names to be titled Logainmneacha Mínithe. He is working on three other books as well, a poetry collection, a humorous book, and an autobiography. He is very interested in history, music, football and hurling, in men and women, and in the future of the language.
