Beairtle Ó Conaire came to the Boys’ N. S., An Spidéal, Co. Galway, as an assistant teacher, subsequently becoming principal. Employed part-time in the late sixties and early seventies in UCG and later in Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge as a teacher and in a supervisory role with Hibernia College. Born on 22 July 1939 in Gairfean, Ros Muc, Co. Galway, he attended S. N. Ros Muc where he won a Preparatory Scholarship to Coláiste Éinde, Galway. Proceeding to St. Patrick’s College, Dublin he qualified as a primary teacher. He obtained a BA degree and H. Dip. in Ed. at the then University College Galway. He won Oireachtas prizes for his short stories. Two collections were published: An Fête agus Scéalta Eile (1984) and Marilyn Monroe i mBaile an Ghoirt (1991). Fonn na Fola (2005) won the 2004 Oireachtas Prize for the literary novel of that year. Lár an Domhain (2008) took the Oireachtas Prize of 2006 for a collection of short stories. The novel Iad Seo Nach bhFaca was published in 2010. His literary output also includes articles on education in the 19th century: 'Scoil Scairte', 'Scoil Sháile Liath', 'Scoil Ros Muc' (1997) in Leabhar Ros Muc 1997, 'Bunoideachas i gCeantar an Spidéil 1826–1910' in Cill Éinde – Céad Bliain (2007), as well as contributions on aspects of the church, book reviews and various articles.
