Ghnóthaigh a céad úrscéal, Nuair a Stadann an Ceol: Úrscéal don Fhoghlaimeoir Fásta (LeabhairCOMHAR, 2013) duais ag Comórtais Liteartha an Oireachtais agus bhronn Éigse Éireann, i gcomhar le Cumann Múinteoirí Éireann, ‘Duais Chuimhneacháin Seamus Heaney’ uirthi sa bhliain 2014. B’údar í, freisin, ar Leathbhádóirí: Úrscéal don Fhoghlaimeoir Fásta (LeabhairCOMHAR, 2017); Giolcaireacht sa Ghairdín: Pictiúrleabhar do Pháistí (LeabhairCOMHAR, 2018) agus Dún do Shúile: Pictiúrleabhar do Pháistí (LeabhairCOMHAR, 2021). I gcomhar le hAodán Mac Suibhne, scríobh sí trí théacsleabhar do mhúinteoirí bunscoile (IOM, 2006, 2008, 2009) – múinteoirí a fhaigheann a gcáilíochtaí oideachais thar lear agus a thugann faoin gCáilíocht sa Ghaeilge – agus, sa bhliain 2018, ba chomhúdar í ar thairiscint ar éirigh léi maoiniú a ghnóthú chun Baitsiléireacht san Oideachas trí Mheán na Gaeilge a sholáthar in Institiúid Oideachais Marino. Rinne Marie comheagarthóireacht ar dhá chnuasach d’aistí gearra (IOM, 2016; Réalta an Deiscirt, 2022) agus ar eagrán speisialta den iris phiarmheasta, COMHARTaighde (2020). Tá sí ina Cathaoirleach ar Choiste Comhairleach na nEaspag Caitliceach um an Liotúirge i nGaeilge agus, sa ról sin, bíonn sí páirteach in athbhreithniú agus in eagarthóireacht leabhar liotúirgeach i nGaeilge.
Marie Whelton is a native of Courtmacsherry, West Cork, and it was there that her interest in language and learning was first awakened by her mother, Noreen, and by her primary school teachers at Scoil Mhuire, Barraigh Rua. She is a Lecturer in Irish (Language and Literature) at Marino Institute of Education, an associated College of Trinity College Dublin. Before she was appointed to that role, she worked as a secondary school teacher (Irish and Religious Education) in Scoil Mhuire, Longford, and as an Irish-language tutor in Maynooth University. She was awarded a Government of Ireland Scholarship by The Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences to undertake her doctoral studies under Professor Máire Ní Annracháin and a book based on her dissertation was published as Teagmháil agus Tnúthán: Staidéar ar an Apastróf i bhFilíocht na Nua-Ghaeilge (An Sagart, 2008). She was awarded a prize for her first novel, Nuair a Stadann an Ceol: Úrscéal don Fhoghlaimeoir Fásta (LeabhairCOMHAR, 2013), at the Oireachtas Literary Awards and in 2014, she was awarded the ‘The Seamus Heaney Memorial Prize’ by Poetry Ireland/INTO. She is also the author of Leathbhádóirí: Úrscéal don Fhoghlaimeoir Fásta (LeabhairCOMHAR, 2017); Giolcaireacht sa Ghairdín: Pictiúrleabhar do Pháistí (LeabhairCOMHAR, 2018) and Dún do Shúile: Pictiúrleabhar do Pháistí (LeabhairCOMHAR, 2021). In collaboration with Aodán Mac Suibhne, she co-wrote three textbooks (IOM, 2006, 2008, 2009) for primary teachers who qualify abroad and who undertake The Irish-Language Requirement examinations, and, in 2018, she co-authored the successful tender which resulted in a Bachelor in Education Through the Medium of Irish Degree Programme being offered at Marino Institute of Education. She was co-editor of two collections of short essays (IOM, 2016; Réalta an Deiscirt, 2022) as well as a special issue of the peer-reviewed academic journal, COMHARTaighde (2020). As Chairperson of Coiste Comhairleach na nEaspag Caitliceach um an Liotúirge i nGaeilge, Marie is part of a team which is involved in reviewing and editing Irish-Language liturgical books.
