Is craoltóir agus scríbhneoir é Cathal Póirtéir a shaothraíonn sa Ghaeilge agus sa Bhéarla. Chraol sé ar feadh 30 bliain ar RTÉ Raidió 1 agus RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta. Bhain mórán den chraoltóireacht sin le cur chun cinn na litríochta agus na saíochta Gaeilge. Bhí sé ina eagarthóir ar leabhair bunaithe ar an obair seo, ina measc Scéaltaí san Aer, Éigse an Aeir, Glórtha ón Ghorta agus Gnéithe den Ghorta (Coiscéim), agus na dlúthdhioscaí dátheangacha a d’fhoilsigh RTÉ, Blasket Island Reflections. Bhí an-ráchairt ar a leabhair i mBéarla The Great Irish Famine (Mercier), agus Famine Echoes (Gill and Macmillan). Tá a chúlra acadúil sa bhéaloideas agus d’fhoilsigh Coiscéim a thráchtas MA mar Micí Sheáin Néill, scéalaí agus scéalta. Ainmníodh a chnuasach filíochta, Tonnchrith Inntine (Coiscéim), do Dhuais Liteartha an Irish Times agus bhain sé Duais na nAmharclanna Gaeilge san Oireachtas do dhráma ardáin leis. Bronnadh Buaic-Ghradam Cumarsáide an Oireachtais agus Bonn Óir Bhord na Gaeilge d'Alumni UCD air. Bíonn iriseoireacht liteartha leis in The Irish Times agus Books Ireland. Chaith sé cúig bliana mar Chathaoirleach ar Imram agus bhí sé ar Chathaoirleach bunaithe Aontas na Scríbhneoirí Gaeilge.
Cathal Póirtéir is a writer and broadcaster who works in Irish and English. Over thirty years he worked as a producer and presenter on RTÉ radio, regularly making programmes that focused on Irish-language literature, folklore and history, most memorably on the folklore of the Irish Famine. He also facilitated many Irish-language writers in commissioning short stories, poetry and plays for the radio, and was involved in many programmes which dealt with literature in Irish. He edited several books in Irish and English based on his radio work. Cathal holds an MA in Irish Folklore from UCD and has lectured widely on folklore topics at home and abroad. His poetry collection, Tonnchrith Inntine, was nominated for an Irish Times Literary Award and his stageplay, Púcaí Dallóg, won an Oireachtas literary award. He has written original radio drama and adapted two novels and a series of Irish folktales for radio. He is Irish-language consultant to Books Ireland, Eagarthóir Gaeilge at writing.ie and an occasional contributor to Treibh in The Irish Times.
