Tomás de Bhaldraithe was professor of Modern-Irish (1960–78) and professor of Irish dialectology (1978–86) in University College Dublin. He worked as editor of English-Irish Dictionary (1959); as chief-editor of Foclóir Stairiúil na Nua-Ghaeilge … Royal Irish Academy (1976–1994); as editor of the seven voloumes in the Deascán foclóireachta 1981-89 (ARÉ) series. He was employed as advisory/ consultant editor of Foclóir Gaeilge-Béarla, 1959–77.
