Réamonn Ó Muirí, a native of Newtownhamilton in Co. Armagh, was influenced by the teaching of fellow countyman Tomás Ó Fiaich (later Cardinal) during his studies for the priesthood in Maynooth. After his ordination in 1962, he became active in Cumann Seanchais Ard Mhacha/The Armagh Diocesan Historical Society and edited its journal, Seanchas Ard Mhacha, from 1986 to 2013 while contributing multiple articles on church history and the manuscript tradition of south-east Ulster in particular. Under the auspices of the Society, he published many historical works in book form, such as Irish Church History Today (1990) and The Burning of Wildgoose Lodge (2005). His scholarly edition of Art Mac Bionaid’s (1793-1879) history Comhrac na nGael agus na nGall le chéile appeared as Lámhscríbhinn Staire an Bhionadaigh (Éigse Oirialla, 1994). He has gained international recognition for this work in the protection of human rights in Ireland, and has written pioneering, controversial studies such as The SAS in Ireland (Cork Mercier Press, 1990) and State Violence: Northern Ireland 1969-1997 (Mercier Press, 1998), in addition to over a hundred pamhplets, leaflets and broadsheets on the subject in partnership with Father Denis Faul (1932-2006). Ó Muirí has published three collections of poetry (Athphreabadh na hÓige (An Clóchomhar, 1964); Arán ar an Tábla (An Clóchomhar, 1970); Lampaí Dearga (Coiscéim, 2005), which won the Oireachtas Prize).
