Educated in Coláiste Mhichíl, Listowel, John B. Keane spent some years in England before settling in Listowel in 1954 as a publican and writer. His play Sive brought him to the public's attention in 1959. His best known plays are The Field (1965) and Big Maggie (1969). Dan Pheaidí Aindí, his book in Irish on the famous matchmaker, was published in 1977. He also wrote short stories, novels and various other works. He received honorary doctorates from Trinity College Dublin, the University of Limerick and Marymount College (Manhattan).
