Better known up to 1960 for his writing in English under the name Eugene Watters. His first book was the novel Murder in three moves (Allen Figgis, 1960). He commenced The week-end of Dermot and Grace, a lengthy poem about the Hiroshima bombing, in 1950 and continued its composition up to 1960. It was published by Allen Figgis in 1964. Other works include Sidelines, a diary of poems 1951–1974 (1981), Focus: fifty poems analysed (1972) (with Desmond Egan), Rogha an fhile (1974), and Infinite Variety: Dan Lowry’s music hall 1879–1897 (1975).
