Breandán is a Programme Editor with Nuacht RTÉ-TG4. He was the founding editor of Foinse and also worked as editor with the television programmes Ardán and Seacht Lá on TG4. He won the ESB Journalist of the Year award in 2003 for his investigation of a sexual abuse scandal in summer colleges over a 30 year period. His documentary Mad Dog Coll won an IFTA award in the year 2000. The documentary was based on his biography of a notorious gangster from the Donegal Gaeltacht (Mad Dog Coll: an Irish Gangster, Mercier, 1999). He won the top prize for print journalism at the Oireachtas in 1998 and 2010. He was awarded the ‘World Indigenous Journalism Award’ for investigative reporting in 2014. He has published several other books: Úrscéalta Stairiúla na Gaeilge (An Clóchomhar, 1993), Ar an Taifead (Cois Life, 2007 agus 2012) agus Scéal Scéil: Rúndiamhra na Meán (Cois Life, 2014) as well as regular articles for The Irish Times, Tuairisc.ie, Sunday Business Post, Foinse, Comhar, Beo.ie, Anois, Ireland on Sunday and many other periodicals. He spent over ten years as drama critic of The Irish Times in the west of Ireland. In 2011, he was appointed as an ‘expert’ with the Council of Europe to help with media projects in minority languages in the Russian Federation and worked in the Republic of Mordovia and in Altai Krai, Siberia. He has spent many years working as a hillwalking guide for Oideas Gael in Gleann Cholm Cille, Co. Donegal.
