Aodh Ó Domhnaill
Genres: Playwright, Poet, Lyricist
Rugadh Aodh i mBaile Átha Cliath sa bhliain 1947. B’as na Rosa dá athair agus b’as oirthear Thír Chonaill dá mháthair. Is chun amhrán a spreagadh peann Aoidh i dtús báire, iad á gcanadh ag Na hUaisle sna seachtóidí. Ansin, d’imigh sé le filíocht agus foilsíodh trí bhailiúchán leis ag Coiscéim: Feic (1984), Cambhaill (1987), Is Araile (1993). Thosnaigh sé ag aisteoireacht le hAisteoirí Bulfin agus spreag sin é chun drámaí a scríobh. Le fiche bliain anuas, tá deich gcinn de dhrámaí leis léirithe ag na hAisteoirí sin, ina measc Mac an Stanley (leagan comhaimseartha den ‘Threepenny Opera’), An Campa (léirithe ag Garrett Keogh), ansin LaraeDó agus 1915 (léirithe ag Barry Barnes). Chomh maith leo sin, léiríodh Lá Breá (Taibhdhearc na Gaillimhe), Caifé-ar-Ais agus Republica (Aisling Ghéar, Béal Feirste), Raic (AnnÓg, An Daingean) agus leathdhosaen ar an aer ag RTÉ Raidió 1. In 2010, léiríodh Idir an Dá Shúil i nGaillimh agus ar stáitse na Péacóige, léiriú a thuill Gradam Stewart Parker. Bhí Aodh pósta le Máiréad Ní Chinnéide as Iarthar Duibhneach. Cailleadh go tobann ar 24 Eanáir 2018 é, agus é sa bhaile i mBaile Eaglaise, Co. Chiarraí.
Aodh was born in Dublin in 1947. His father came from the Rosses in Donegal. His mother, a Gallen, came from East Donegal. Songwriting was Aodh’s first ambition, performed by Na hUaisle in the mid-seventies. He moved on to poetry and has three collections published by Coiscéim: Feic (1984), Cambhaill (1987) and Is Araile (1993). He was also acting with Aisteoirí Bulfin and this led him into playwriting. Over the last twenty years, the group has staged ten of Aodh’s plays, including Mac an Stanley (a modern version of the ‘Threepenny Opera’), An Campa (directed by Garrett Keogh), then LaraeDó and 1915 (directed by Barry Barnes). Other productions have been with the Taibhdhearc in Galway (Lá Breá), Aisling Ghéar in Belfast (Caifé ar Ais, Republica), AnnÓg in Dingle (Raic) and some half-dozen with RTÉ Radio 1. In 2010, Idir an Dá Shúil (a joint TíAitreo/Taibhdhearc production) was staged in Galway and at the Peacock, winning a Stewart Parker Award. Aodh was married to Máiréad Ní Chinnéide from West Kerry. He died suddenly at home in Kerry on 24th January 2018.
