Úna Nic Éinrí
Genres: Editor, Academic writer
Rugadh Úna Nic Éinrí i Mainistir na Féile, Co. Luimnigh, mí Feabhra na bliana 1941, i lár an Dara Cogadh Domhanda. Is beag an bhunscolaíocht a fuair sí, toisc gur bhuail Póilió í tar éis di clárú sa scoil áitiúil, agus chaith sí cúig nó sé de bhlianta dá bharr in Oispidéal an Cheapaigh, i bhFionnghlas i mBaile Átha Cliath. Nuair a d’fhill sí ar an scoil sa bhaile, d’fhoghlaim sí Gaeilge, mar mhúintí gach aon ábhar trí Ghaeilge ann ag an am.
Chaith sí blianta sona in Ollscoil na hÉireann, Gaillimh, áit ar ghnóthaigh sí BA is MA sa Léann Ceilteach. Ina dhiaidh sin bhog sí go dtí Institiúid Ard Léinn, Baile Átha Cliath ar chomhaltacht thaighde. Ina theannta sin, d’fhreastail sí ar an gColáiste Ollscoile, Baile Átha Cliath, a bhí suite ar Ardán Phort an Iarla ag an am, chun cáilíochtaí mar mhúinteoir dara leibhéal a ghnóthú. Ar ais go Mainistir na Féile léi ansin, mar ar fostaíodh í mar mhúinteoir Gaeilge agus Staire i Scoil Iósaf is Íde Naofa. Ba sa tréimhse sin (1971) a scríobh sí Stair Litríocht na Gaeilge, mar threoir do dhaltaí Ard Teistiméireachta.
Mealladh ar ais go Baile Átha Cliath í ina dhiaidh sin, agus chuaigh sí ag obair i gColáiste Dhún Chéirí, ag múineadh Gaeilge do na hábhair oidí ann. B’éigean di filleadh ar Luimneach, áfach, de bharr cúrsaí clainne, agus bhí an t-ádh léi go bhfuair sí post ag múineadh Gaeilge i gColáiste Mhuire gan Smál, Ollscoil Luimnigh. Chaith sí breis is tríocha bliain ann, nó gur éirigh sí as sa bhliain 2005. Le linn di a bheith ann thug sí faoin gcéim Dhochtúireachta i gColáiste na Ríona, Béal Feirste. An t-ábhar a roghnaigh sí ná Tadhg Gaelach ó Súilleabháin, file ón ochtú haois déag. An Dr Nollaig Ó Muraíle a stiúraigh an tráchtas. Mhúscail sin suim inti i saothar fileata eile ó chontae is ó chathair Luimnigh, agus i gcaitheamh na mblianta chuir sí saothar na bhfilí seo leanas in eagar is i gcló: An tAth. Uilliam English, Seán Ó Tuama, Muiris Ó Gríofa, Séamus Ó Dálaigh agus filí eile Luimníocha gan iomrá. Tá sí ag saothrú sa ghort sin go fóill, agus baineann sí sásamh as an taighde.
Úna Nic Éinrí, a native of Abbeyfeale, Co. Limerick, was born on 23rd February 1941. At the age of 4 years she contracted Polio, as a consequence of which she spent many years in Cappagh Hospital, Finglas, Co. Dublin. She studied at the National University of Ireland, Galway, where she was awarded a BA and MA in Celtic Studies. She received a Fellowship to The School of Celtic Studies, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies. Her studentship there, under the guidance of Gearóid Mc Niocaill, led to the publication of ‘the Second Recension of the Evernew Tongue’ (Celtica 9, 1971). She attended University College, Dublin also, where she completed a Higher Diploma in Education.
She returned to her Alma Mater, where she taught Irish and History in Scoil Íde agus Iósaf Naofa, for five years. During her time there she wrote a successful guide for Leaving Certificate students, Stair Litríocht na Gaeilge (Folens, 1971). She returned to Dublin, to take up an appointment as a lecturer in Carysfort College, teaching Irish language and literature to student primary teachers. However, for family reasons, she returned to Limerick, where she spent over thirty years lecturing in Irish at Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick, before retiring in 2005.
While teaching, she was conferred with a Doctorate in Irish from Queen’s University, Belfast. Her chosen topic of research was Tadhg Gaelach Ó Súilleabháin, and her supervisor was An Dr Nollaig Ó Muraíle. This sparked her interest in other eighteenth-century poets, resulting in publications on Father William English, Seán Ó Tuama, Muiris Ó Gríofa, Séamus Ó Dálaigh, and other lesser-known Limerick poets.
She continues to work in her chosen field of research.
